After making changes, it is important to actively follow up to check if the changes helped or introduced unexpected new problems.
- Workers don’t always speak up if they are having problems.
- Sometimes they wait too long to speak up, when problems can be more difficult to address.
Best practice:
- Check in with the worker immediately after the change to gather first impressions and ensure everything is working properly.
- A negative first impression is not necessarily a bad thing because it can take time to get used to a change but a negative first impression will require more frequent follow up to assess the success of the change.
- Arrange to meet with the worker a week after the change to discuss the changes. The form below will help the worker prepare for the meeting or can be used for note-taking during the meeting.
- Let the worker know they can reach out to you sooner, if things are going really badly.
